Oh, beautiful emerald lawns, the scent of freshly cut grass, and giving in to the urge to walk barefoot through it. So lovely, so green… Is that a spot of brown? Golden brown? As in dry grass golden brown? How could that happen when the rest of the landscape is green?
Maybe it’s time to think about updating the sprinkler and irrigation system. Sometimes some of the bedding flowers look a little wilted, so maybe the needs of the entire landscape have grown beyond the installed sprinkler and irrigation system.
Well, there is a solution. You know how complicated it is to install sprinklers and other irrigation systems. It might be a bit messy while things are being installed, but once done, you’ll have your green expanse again, with all the benefits of a working landscape.
First steps
You already have a working relationship with Custom Acres, and they do sprinkler and irrigation installation and modification. They can help you figure out what’s needed, what can stay the same, and what needs to be modified. Call and arrange for a free consultation.
Why?
Wow, that was an illuminating consultation. You have a lot of information regarding your irrigation system and how it needs to grow with your landscape. You probably had no idea how many different ways to irrigate grass and landscape. Even more critical, descriptions of how to water different plants, trees, shrubs, flowers, and gardens will make your landscape healthier and more water-efficient.
The discussion of different watering systems for different areas and types of plants was incredibly illuminating. While sprinklers may be watering your flower bedding at the selected time of day, the water might not be reaching the roots of your flowers and plants. This is especially true if you have plants of varying heights in one flower bed. A different type of system seems to be the correct answer to that problem.
Why is the correct irrigation or sprinkler system so necessary?
- The brown spots represent areas where the sprinklers are not watering adequately. The cause may be as simple as adjusting a sprinkler head or as tricky as allowing for more wind at times of the day and adjusting the watering times for those areas.
Grassy areas need even watering, more so than other parts of your landscape. A sprinkler system can provide this even watering without causing too much run-off of extra water.
Timers can be used to set different parts of the system to function at the best times and places. For example, the system is usually set to allow the least water waste possible.
- Automated watering systems can target specific areas with precise amounts of water. This will promote water conservation and help save on your water bills. It will also help in preventing erosion of soil on sloping ground.
- Drip irrigation systems will be most efficient in a garden, on flower borders or beds, and ornamental plantings. A drip system delivers the precious nectar of water to the roots of the plants, which increases conservation and prevents erosion.
- Better plant health is always a consideration, and irrigation is the key. Irrigation zones can be established to ensure each area of your landscape will receive the needed amount of water. Once the system is automated, water distribution is more precise.
- Here, in Florida, your plants will need more water in summer than in spring and fall. Your irrigation system can be set to water during evening hours when less will be wasted on evaporation.
While you can override your system if rain occurs during the day, rain sensors can help you operate your system more efficiently. They will stop the watering cycle if rain has adequately watered your landscape during the day.
- Professionals should do the installation of irrigation systems. In addition to your system operating correctly when they’re finished, they won’t need to make quite the extensive mess an amateur might make in deciding placement, depth, and type of irrigation.
Irrigation is critical in Florida, where seasonal heat can reach plant-roasting temperatures. At the same time, that seasonal heat is often interrupted by the heavy seasonal showers. These generally occur during the afternoon and usually last for about an hour. The good news? At least frozen iguanas won’t fall out of trees and hit you on the head.
It’s worth noting that summer is also hurricane season for Florida and the Caribbean. These tropical cyclones are known to be destructive, random, and life-threatening. Some of the water a hurricane drops will be saltwater, but your Custom Acres gurus will know how to counteract any damage the salty water does.
The better outcome
Your new and improved watering system is installed, and the messes are cleaned up. Your front area looks like a perfect emerald carpet, mowed to precisely the right height, soft, inviting bare feet to experience its lushness. The new beds of flowers are fantastic, a beautiful splash of color and scent. Each flower was chosen for its color, shape, and size, contrasting with the green around the beds. The new system keeps the bedding flowers in perfect health.
The vegetable and herb gardens in the back are in the perfect place – they get plenty of sun and water (thanks to the new system) and are just a few steps beyond the back door. The fresh herbs that came leaping from the ground have been perfect accents to your cooking. The leafy vegetables are doing great; you’ve already had a salad with fresh butter lettuce, which was terrific.
You even found out why the root vegetables aren’t doing as well. Your toddler checks their growth daily by pulling one out of the ground and checking to see how it’s doing, then replanting it. Yesterday, you rinsed off a baby carrot and let him eat it fresh from the garden!
Water is the elixir of life, for all life, at least on this planet. Custom Acres will make sure your landscape and gardens are adequately supplied.
